The cuvette path length is the interior distance between a cuvette’s parallel optical windows that a particular wavelength of light must traverse through. Spectrometers have a standard chamber size in which the cuvette is placed during chemical analysis. That’s why it is essential to select a cuvette that will accommodate your spectrometer’s chamber size. Glass cells are most common in school and college undergraduate laboratories because of their lower cost. Optical glass shows absorbance throughout the visible and IR regions extending from nearly 340 nm to 2500nm covering majority of organic and in inorganic species. However, glass absorbs strongly in UV region and its application is not recommended for wavelengths below 340 nm.

Historically, reusable quartz cuvettes were required for measurements in the ultraviolet range, because glass and most plastics absorb ultraviolet light, creating interference. Today there are disposable plastic cuvettes made of specialized plastics that are transparent to ultraviolet light. On customer’s request they can be replaced with crystal quartz, sapphire or silicon windows. IR quartz has a usable wavelength range of 220 to 3,500 nm. Made from JGS1 UV-grade fused silica, absorption onset occurs below 170 nm and there are no absorption bands situated between 170 nm and 250 nm. Some cuvettes will be clear only on opposite sides, so that they pass a single beam of light through that pair of sides; often the unclear sides have ridges or are rough to allow easy handling.
